2025 Future of Dispute Resolution – Key Takeaways and Highlights

A Global Conversation on AI, Ethics, and Innovation

On June 10, 2025, the American Arbitration Association–International Centre for Dispute Resolution® (AAA-ICDR®), in collaboration with Wolters Kluwer and HiiL, hosted the second Future I Dispute Resolution (FDR) Conference at the Peace Palace in The Hague, Netherlands. This full-day, high-profile event convened global leaders in law, dispute resolution, and legal technology to explore how artificial intelligence and emerging technologies are reshaping the future of international arbitration and mediation.

The Peace Palace, a landmark of international justice, provided a powerful setting to reaffirm AAA-ICDR’s leadership in cross-border ADR and legal innovation. From digital arbitrators and agentic workflows to AI ethics and procedural integrity, the event addressed urgent challenges and forward-looking opportunities for the global ADR community.

Structured as a full-day forum, the conference featured a robust lineup of sessions. Discussions covered AI ethics, transparency, human oversight, and re-engineering dispute resolution for business outcomes. A highlight of the day included a keynote from Dr. Hab. Marcin Czepelak, Secretary-General of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, as well as panels led by legal thought leaders from firms and institutions including White & Case, Skadden, Three Crowns, ODR.com, and the Swiss Arbitration Association.

Global Reach and Participation

The conference welcomed 100 participants, representing Europe, North America, and beyond. In-house counsel from Microsoft, Shell, Jet Aviation, Bayer, Fives, and Nord Security joined legal professionals from major international firms and ADR organizations, including CPR, IMI, ICCA, PCA, and ArbTech.

Participants gathered not only to learn and network, but also to align on the responsible application of AI in dispute resolution. From government officials and institutional leaders to technologists and advocates, the diversity of the room reflected AAA-ICDR’s role as a convener of ideas across borders and disciplines.

Looking Ahead: Future DR NYC

Following the success of the event in The Hague, AAA-ICDR will host the next Future Dispute Resolution event in New York City on October 9–10, 2025. The two-day program will continue building on the momentum from The Hague, with deeper dives into GenAI, digital governance, and real-world ADR innovation.
