AI Arbitrator: The Opportunity

You have questions about the AI Arbitrator. We have answers.

Our new video series, Arbitration Intelligence, explains how the AI Arbitrator was developed, how it’s governed, and how it’s being used in practice. The series takes viewers inside the decisions behind the technology, from design and oversight to real-world application.

In the first episode, “The Opportunity,” we explain why the AI Arbitrator was created and the problem it was designed to solve. Arbitration has long promised efficiency, fairness, and flexibility. At the same time, businesses and law firms have been seeking ways to manage costs and expedite resolution in the face of growing caseloads. The AI Arbitrator was introduced to help ease these pressures, enabling high volume dispute types to be resolved more quickly, cost-effectively, and transparently, without removing human judgment from the process.

Developed in collaboration with QuantumBlack, AI by McKinsey, and informed by extensive testing and feedback from experienced AAA arbitrators, the AI Arbitrator organizes claims, summarizes evidence, and prepares draft reasoned awards. A human arbitrator then reviews, validates, revises if needed, and issues the final decision — combining technological efficiency with the procedural fairness, accountability, and careful judgment that define AAA arbitration.

The AI Arbitrator will significantly expand our capacity to serve clients across the full spectrum of disputes, from high-volume matters to complex cases requiring sophisticated, bespoke resolution pathways.
