Williams: I have represented high-profile athletes, sports management professionals, and agents in complex transactional disputes involving the business and contractual relationships that shape the sports industry.

What drew you to ADR work in this space, and what do you find most rewarding about serving on the AAA’s Sports Conflicts Panel?

Williams: The fast-paced nature of the industry and the need to resolve disputes efficiently. Decisions often must be made on compressed timelines so athletes can continue competing, and sporting events can proceed with as little disruption as possible. Serving on the AAA’s Sports Conflicts Panel is especially rewarding because it provides an opportunity to help parties reach timely, practical resolutions in matters where the consequences can be immediate and significant.

What advice would you give parties preparing for arbitration or mediation in complex sports disputes?

Williams: Parties should come to the process with a strong understanding of the sport itself, as well as the rules, regulations, and applicable law governing the dispute. Sports matters often move on compressed timelines, leaving little opportunity to develop that knowledge once proceedings are underway. Thorough preparation allows parties to identify the key issues quickly, present their positions effectively, and respond to developments as decisions are made.
